Dynamic Earth Flashcards
Define Pangea
When all the continents were connected in 1 landmass
Inner core
Solid centre of the earth. Extremely high temp, up to 6,000 C
Outer core
Molten nickle + iron
Mantle
Under the crust
Magma
Moves around very slowly - convection curents
Crust
Thin outer layer of the earth
solid rock
Plate boundary
Where plates meet
Plate
Large slab of the earth’s crust
Describe Convection currents
1)The earths core heats the magma causing it to rise up toward the crust
2)As it rises it cools
3)The cooling makes the lava heavy + sink down again
4)This cycle repeats, causing convection currents
5)The convection currents make the plates move slowly. They slide past, separate or collide into eachother
define convection currents
The circular movement of magma in the mantle
