Q

What is the D-dimer test?

A

This is a highly sensitive test which tests for the breakdown of cross-linked fibrin

Q

What should be done in cases of a negative D-dimer test?

16
Q

How is the severity of PE calculated?

A

PESI score

17
Q

How is DVT treated?

A

Oral anti-coagulation
Possible thrombolysis

18
Q

How is PE treated?

A

High risk = Thrombolysis then anti-coagulation
Low risk = Oral anti-coagulation

19
Q

Which anticoagulants are used in DVT and PE?

A

1st - DOAC - Rivaroxiban or Apixaban
2nd - Warfarin
PE + Cancer - LMWH

20
Q

What is post thrombotic syndrome?

A

This is a condition arising post-thrombosis, characterised by:
- Pain
- Oedema
- Hyperpigmentation
- Eczema
- Varicose collateral veins
- Venous ulceration

21
Q

What is chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension?

A

Class IV pulmonary hypertension is a serious complication of PE and often begins asymptomatic but leads to progressive dyspnoea and hypoxaemia, with right heart failure
