First unprovoked/isolated seizure, no structural abnormalities or EEG

First unprovoked/isolated seizure, has structural abnormalities or EEG
12 months
Patients with established epilepsy or those with multiple unprovoked seizures
12 months seizure free; no seizure for 5 years then til 70 licence
Withdrawal of epilepsy medication
Should not drive whilst anti-epilepsy medication is being withdrawn and for 6 months after the last dose
Simple faint
No restrictions
Single episode of syncope, explained and treated
4 weeks
Single episode of syncope, unexplained, untreated
6 months
Two or more episodes of syncope
12 months
Stroke or TIA, no neurological deficit
1 month, no need to inform DVLA
Multiple TIAs over short period of time
3 months and inform DVLA
Craniotomy for meningioma
1 year; 6 months if benign tumour and no seizure history
Craniotomy pituitary tumour
6 months
Pituitary tumour, transsphenoidal
Can drive if no residual
Narcolepsy/cataplexy
Cease immediately; can return once symptom free
Chronic neurologic disorders
Inform DVLA
Patient with hypertension and group 2 entitlement
Disqualified from driving if resting BP persistent >180 systolic or >100 diastolic
After elective angioplasty
1 week off driving
CABG
4 weeks off
ACS - medical treatment
4 weeks off
ACS - treated with angioplasty
1 week off driving
Angina
Must cease driving if symptoms occur at rest
Pacemaker insertion
1 week off driving
ICD for sustained ventricular arrhythmia
6 months
ICD as prophylaxis
1 month
ICD for group 2 drivers
Permanent bar
Successful catheter ablation for arrhythmia
2 days off driving
Aortic aneurysm (size that disqualifies driving)
More than 6.5cm
Heart transplant
6 weeks off, no need to notify DVLA
Requirements for patients who drive who use insulin (groups 1 and 2) - 2 answers
No hypoglycaemic event in 12 months, regular glucose monitoring at least 2x daily and relevant to driving
On insulin - group 1 and 2 drivers
Notify DVLA or DVLA will contact them
If on tablets for diabetes, notify DVLA?
No need to notify DVLA
Patient with mononuclear vision
Can drive if other eye has normal vision
Patient with blepharospasm
Consultant opinion required
Alcohol misuse
Licence revocation and at least 6 months alcohol free or controlled drinking
Alcohol dependency
1 year off alcohol
Which drugs bar patients from driving for 6 months unless drug free?
Cannabis, meth, ecstasy, LSD
Which drugs bar patients from driving for 1 year unless drug free?
Heroin, cocaine, methadone
Significant anxiety or depression affecting memory and behaviour
Must not drive and must notify DVLA
Acute psychotic disorder
Must not drive during acute illness and must notify the DVLA
Hypomania or mania
Must not drive during acute illness and must notify the DVLA
Schizophrenia
Must not drive during acute illness and must notify the DVLA
Pervasive developmental disorders and ADHD
May be able to drive but must inform the DVLA
Mild cognitive impairment
May drive and need not inform the DVLA
Dementia
May be able to drive but must inform the DVLA
Mild learning disability
May be able to drive but must inform the DVLA
Severe memory disability
Must not drive and must notify the DVLA
Personality disorders
May be able to drive but must inform the DVLA
