Martin Luther King Jr.
African-American Civil Rights Leader of the 1950s/1960s and Baptist minister who led many protests, as well as gave speeches in order to aid the Civil Rights Movement.
Nelson Mandela
A socialist lawyer who advocated against racial segregation/apartheid in South Africa in the 20th century. He also led non-violent protests
Modes of Communication
Television and radio ads encouraged people to make long-distance phone calls. Soon after, telephones and cellphones would follow, as well as social-networking sites.
Green Revolution
A revolution in which new ways of growing crops (crossbreeding, genetic engineering) had been developed in response to global hunger.
Medical Innovations
In a time of discovering, especially in a time where very serious diseases had come, antibiotics and vaccines began to be introduced (the first antibiotic being penicillin from Alexander Fleming).
Covid-19 Pandemic
A pandemic originating in China in very early 2020, that soon infected many and caused a worldwide call for quarantine.
Diseases of Poverty
Malaria- Killed over 600K people in tropic areas, mostly young African children.
Tuberculosis- Associated with poverty, and affects the lungs, especially in prisons.
Cholera- Disease found in dirty, contaminated water, as well as polio
Diseases of Longevity
Heart Disease- It’s said the longer you live, heart disease is more likely to appear, and the same goes for alzheimer’s and dementia.
Causes of Environmental Change
- Population growth caused more use of land for agriculture, resulting in deforestation and soil erosion
- Urbanization caused the growth of cities taking over land
- Industrialization caused energy and natural resources to start being used up
Economic Liberalization
Less restriction towards opening up the economy to trade for better participation.
Deng Xiaoping
Chinese Leader during the 1980s who backed China’s communist economy up a bit to achieve economic growth.
Knowledge Economy
Knowledge economies use knowledge and ideas for economic purposes (designers, engineers, and teachers)
World Trade Organization
Formed in 1995, this organization governed more than 90 percent of all international trade in order to encourage safe trade between different countries around the globe. However, the organization was a very private one, and the decisions of it were in favor of the corporation, not other countries.
Multinational Corporations
A corporation involving multiple nations that may make, buy, or sell in other countries other than itself (British East India Company), (Dutch East India Company).
ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations)
Regional organization in Southeast Asia providing regional economic growth after WWII.
