Social Darwinism
The theory that the weakest links will be weeded out by those who are stronger and more fit to survive to help support that whites were biologically superior.
Belgian Congo
The Belgium government’s conquering of the Congo Basin in Africa by overtaking many colonies and having King Leopold establish a private colony.
Berlin Conference
A meeting to discuss the orderly colonization for the European nations, with the addition of colonial boundaries and free movement of goods.
Settler Colonies
Colonies that are meant to force other indigenous populations out, which focus on using the land to their economic advantage (Agriculture/Trade). However, the result is that the indigenous population declines, they are forced into labor, and they are in poor conditions like poverty and sanitary issues.
Suez Canal
A canal connecting the Mediterranean and Red Sea to save the trip around Africa and get to Asia faster. However, many Egyptians were forced into labor as a form of taxation.
Boxer Rebellion
An uprising in China where the objective was to drive out all of the foreigners and attempt to control the population.
Creation of the Zulu Kingdom
A well-centralized, balanced kingdom that is located on South African coast next to the Indian Ocean, which went to war with the British and loss and in return lost some of their land.
Indian Rebellion of 1857
The rebellion in which the Hindus and Muslims were offended by the British use of rifle cartridges greased with cows and pigs, which are sacred in both religions, which initiated Indian nationalism. (A.K.A, Sepoy Mutiny)
Tupac Amaru II’s Rebellion in Peru
A rebellion which started with Tupac arresting and executing a colonial administrator, beginning the last revolt with India against Spain, supported by criollos. The revolt spread before Tupac and his family were executed, and Tupac had to watch.
Xhosa Cattle-Killing Movement
The attempt that the Xhosa people made to drive out the British settlers by slaughtering many cattle, which only resulted in famine due to loss of food and a massive decline in Xhosa people who died. Unfortunately, the British were not driven out.
Export Economy
Colonies that are used to process, manufacture, and ship goods away to colonies in need of raw materials. The place of interest for imperial nations to create these export colonies were more in tropical climates.
Economic Imperialism
Imperialism that involves a country that has more economic influence and power over others to take advantage of natural resources outside of it’s boundaries; Like the Opium Wars.
Opium Wars
To fix the trade imbalance, the British began growing opium, however the Chinese found this drug to be highly addictive in the population and illegalized it. However, the British still made attempts to set up opium warehouses, which were busted by the Chinese government, and started a long time war between Britain and China in relation to opium.
Chinese/Indian Indentured Servitude
Indentured servants enact in labor in order to pay off either a debt, transportation, or to earn money for a community/family. This system of migration helped bring new cultures into other countries and change the population’s diversity.
Migrant Workers
A person who migrates from their country to either work, or is forced to migrate and work.
