Shi Gao is strictly Excess Heat whereas Zhi Mu, if paired with Huang Bai, is for KD Def Heat or if paired with Chuan Bei Mu is for LU Def Heat

Xi Xin + Shi Gao

CLEAR HEAT - QI LEVEL
* Good for Shao Yin H/A - KD - so that’s why toothache
* Indications: ST Heat, toothache, bleeding/swollen/ painful gums, oral ulcers, glossitis; H/A d/t WH entering clear orifices

Xi Xin is a warm herb, but it’s okay bc it’s used in combo with Shi Gao and in general, when there are warm and cold herbs together, cold herbs will generally win

Huang Bai + Cang Zhu

A

CLEAR HEAT - DAMP HEAT
* Wilting of the lower limbs w/ pn d/t D-H pouring downward to the lower part
* Cang Zhu is one of the most drying herbs of the pharmacopia
* D-H in the genital area - vaginal discharge; external vaginal itching; cloudy, scanty urination
Red, swollen, hot, painful joints d/t W-D-H Bi Syndrome

Found in Er Miao San and can be modified to become San Miao San & Si Miao San

Remember the 3 Huangs for clearing D-H
-Huang Qin - upper burner (can work in all three jiaos, but particularly upper)
-Huang Lian - middle burner (can work in all three jiaos, but particularly middle)
-Huang Bai - lower burner (works specifically for lower jiao)

Cang Zhu + Bai Zhu both tonify SP + Dry Damp
-Cang Zhu is better at drying damp
-Bai Zhu is better for tonifying SP

* Summer-Heat + Damp: marked by fever, restlessness, thirst, diarrhea, difficulty in urine

Found in Liu Yi San (6:1 ratio powder)
180g Hua Shi + 30g Gan Cao –> to clear SH

Knowing the numbers helps:

Ban Xia is sl. toxic and should always be prepped w/ sheng jiang to harmonize it/ lower its toxicity; but also Ban Xia + Sheng Jiang = good for N/V

The Tx strategy for treating phlegm/ damp:
1) Transform Phlegm (Ban Xia) - Er Chen Tang - BX is King Herb/ Damp (Cang Zhu) - Ping Wei San - CZ is King Herb
2) Regulate Qi - Chen Pi - helps the transformation process
3) Strengthen SP - Fu Ling

* Cough with copious, clear bubbly sputum and pain, fullness in the chest d/t Cold Phlegm
* Chronic cough/phlegm in elderly and deficient patients

Found in San Zi Yang Qin Tang

Aside: Lai Fu Zi = Daikon seed. It antagonizes Ren Shen. Ren Shen TONIFIES Qi whereas LFZ BREAKS UP the Qi. So if you Rx Ren Shen - make sure pt. is not also on LFZ and advise against eating Daikon or Radish in their diet

A

* Pulmonary abscess with cough, profuse phlegm, chest oppression d/t Heat Stagnation
* Pain, redness, swelling of the throat d/t Heat (Xu/Shi; External/Internal)
* Loss of voice, hoarse/husky voice

Found in Gan Jie Tang

Jie Geng is a guiding herb –> to the throat

JG + GC + He Zi + Chen Pi are neutral and very good as modifications for throat issue

Just remember JG contras hemoptysis

Zhe Bei Mu + Xia Ku Cao

A

DISSOLVE PHLEGM
* Neck lumps/nodules such as in scrofula, lipoma, swollen glands, or goiter d/t Phlegm Fire
* Similar nodules in the inguinal canal and other parts of the body

Remember this DY Pair’s relationship with Xuan Shen + Mu Li - they can strengthen each other when it comes to dissolving nodules

Know the diff:
Chuan Bei Mu + Zhe Bei Mu both transform phlegm-heat and stop cough BUT
CBM: is for LU Dryness, LU Xu, chronic; like BL13 (tonifies)
ZBM: phlegm-heat; LU Shi, Acute; like LU1 (sedates)
