When do you need to do a BP?
On initial assessment and at least annually thereafter ( can be reported y patient if unable to do at that time)
What if you can’t do a BP?
supply 3 months and advise pt to confirm BP before next appointment or re-fill
Does prescription require a breast exam, cervical cancer screening or STI screening?
No
Benefits of quick start?
improved compliance with youth
decreases risk that patient forgets to start or chooses not to start or becomes pregnancy while awaiting initiation
What is important to mention to youth as they tend to have higher discontinuation rates due to side effects
Educate and counsel on side effects and potentially more frequent follow up.
Client Education should include
1.MOA
2.how to use medication
3. onset of contraception vs. when they started taking it
4. estimated when to return to fertility
5. storage
6. backup method and EC
7. drug interactions
8. that birth control is a medication
9. STI protection
10. ACHES and transitional and ongoing side effects
11. Missed or late doses
12. follow up
Follow up?
Not sure if at three months or no routine follow up is required unless they are having issues with the method being used. you can supplye 1-2 years at a time
If pregnancy test is negative but they have had unprotected sex in the last 5 days and are not on their period, when should you repeat the test?
2 -4 weeks. The initial preg test may miss early pregnancy
