DSA 1: Evidence Based OMT Flashcards
What happened in 1909?
AOA formed the AT Still Research Institute
What kind of research was done in the first 1/3 of the 1900s?
Neural and physiologic aspects of SDs
Effects of OMT on symptoms and immune
What did Louisa Burns do?
- impact of bony lesions on anatomy and physiology of organs
- used her findings in clinical palpation to study the physiology of the nervous system
What did Wilbur Cole do?
did anatomic neurology research with Burns
What did John Stedman Denslow do?
-advocated for using scientific instruments and measurements for validation of OMT findings (eg using EMG to study SD effects on muscle reflex and ANS)
What did Irvin Korr do?
-studied the interaction between muscle and ANS, proposed the facilitated segment concept (sustained SNS stimulation affects organs)
What did William Johnston do?
-did the best inter-examiner reliability studies to date, simplified palpatory procedures/techniques to ensure reliability of OMT findings among different examiners
What are some challenges for OMT research?
- Objective findings from subjective palpating experiences
- variability of skills of physicians
- enough OMT resources that can support the validity of the study
- randomized control trials work well with small number of variables that are easily measured
What are the current areas of focus in OMT research?
- Clinical outcomes
- Interexaminer reliability
- Safety/OMT tolerance
- cost effective OMM
