Harm minimisation
An approach to drug use that aims to reduce the harmful effects on you, your friends and family. It focuses on preventing the harms that might result from using drugs and not on whether drugs is right or wrong.
Drug
Any substance, which when taken into the body, alters its function physically or psychologically, excluding food, water and oxygen.
Licit drugs
A drug that is acceptable by law except under certain circumstances, such as when a person is under the legal age.
Eg. Alcohol, tobacco, medications, caffeine
Illicit drugs
A drug that is not legal to use, posses or produce.
Eg. Cannabis, cocaine, ectasy
Psychoactive drug
Drugs of this kind are commonly taken for their effect on how we think, feel and behave
Three groups of psychoactive drugs
Stimulant
Depresant
Hallucinogen
Stimulant drug
Speeds up messages from the CNS to the body.
Increase heart rate, body temp
Increase confidence
Eg. Cocaine, ectasy, caffeine
Depressant
Slows down messages from CNS to the body.
Reduce inhibitions, cause vomiting, death
Eg. Alcohol and cannabis
Hallucinogen drug
Affects a person’s perception
Distort vision, what we hear and touch
Eg. Ectasy, lsd, magic mushrooms
Demand reduction
Strategies aim to reduce individual demand for drug use.
Eg. Drug education, health messages on packaging
Supply control
Strategies that restrict access and supply to drugs
Eg. Banning sale of tobacco to people under 18
Harm reduction
Strategies which target drug users and aim to reduce the harm associated with their drug use which may be caused to both the individual and the community.
Eg. Needle exchange programs, random breath testing
