Drugs Modifying Cardiac Rate and Force Flashcards
Give examples of beta-adrenoreceptor agonists
Dobutamine
Adrenaline
Noradrenaline
What effects do beta agonists have on the cardiovascular system?
Increased heart rate, heart force and cardiac output
May cause arrhythmias
Give an example of a non-selective beta-adrenoceptor antagonist
Propranolol (blocks both B1 and B2 receptors)
Give two examples of B1 selective antagonists
Atenolol
Bisoprolol
What effects do beta blockers have on the cardiovascular system?
Decrease heart rate
Decrease force
Decrease AV node conduction velocity
When are beta blockers used?
Arrhythmias (A Fib and SVT)
Angina
Heart failure
Hypertension
Give an example of a non-selective muscarinic ACh receptor antagonist
Atropine
What effect does atropine have?
Increases heart rate
When is atropine used?
Bradycardia (particularly following MI)
What type of drug is digoxin?
Cardiac glycoside
When is digoxin used?
In heart failure and atrial fibrillation
What is the direct effect of digoxin?
Shortens the action potential
What is the indirect effect of digoxin?
Increases vagal activity which slows SA node discharge and AV node conduction - increases refractory period
What effect does digoxin have on the Frank-Starling curve?
Upward and leftward shift
When should digoxin never be used?
In hypokalaemia
