1B Drugs Flashcards
Diuretics
•Increase the volume of urine produced
•eliminating excess fluids so that blood volume decreases.
•Smaller volume pumped from heart bp falls.
Beta blockers
Block response of heart to hormones e.g. adrenaline
• normally act to speed up heart rate + increase bp
Sympathetic nerve inhibitors
Prevent nerve signaling to arteries, which stimulate arteries to constrict, which raises bp.
Keep arteries dilated and the blood pressure low.
Antihypertensives
Drugs that lower blood pressure.
Anticoagulants
Warfarin
Interfere with manufacture of prothrombin.
Lower levels of prothrombin reduce clotting ability of blood.
Platelet inhibitory drugs
Aspirin + Clopidogrel
Make platelets less sticky.
Reduce clotting ability of blood.
Statins
• lower levels of cholesterol in blood
• block production of cholesterol + LDLs
• reduce inflammation in lining of arteries
Plant stanols and sterols
• reduce blood cholesterol
• sold as food not drug
• similar in structure to cholesterol
