Drugs for Dementia Flashcards
What type of drug is Memantine?
Glutamate NMDA receptor antagonist (non-competitive).
What receptors does Tacrine act upon?
M1, M2, nAChR.
What is Tacrine’s mode of action?
Increases ACh release.
Inhibits MAO.
Increases release of NA, 5HT, and DA.
What are the side effects for Tacrine?
Nausea, vomiting (increased peripheral ACh levels), hepatic toxicity (life-threatening).
What two types of medication are used in the treatment or Alzheimer’s disease?
Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and Glutamate NMDA receptor antagonists.
What is Donepezil’s mode of action?
Increases ACh release.
What is Rivastigmine’s mode of action?
Prevents breakdown of ACh.
What is Galantamine’s mode of action?
Stimulates further ACh release.
What is Memantine’s mode of action?
Decreases Ca2+ influx, slowing down nerve damage.
Which two drugs can also be used for dementia in Parkinson’s?
Rivastigmine and Galantamine.
