Q

Which drug has the greatest potential for causing acute renal failure in the horse?

A
  • Neomycin - antibiotic
  • Aminoglycosides are one of the most common causes of renal tubular nephrosis and acute renal failure.
  • Nephrotic syndrome is a kidney disorder that causes your body to pass too much protein in your urine. Nephrotic syndrome is usually caused by damage to the clusters of small blood vessels in your kidneys that filter waste and excess water from your blood
  • Of the aminoglycosides, neomycin is probably the most nephrotoxic, followed by gentamicin, amikacin, and streptomycin.
  • The other big class of nephrotoxic drugs is non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

Q

Treatment of Mange in Horses

A
  • Lime Sulfur
  • Scabby areas and small bleeding wounds on the lower leg where the horse has traumitised itself, are also a good sign that the horse has chorioptic mites.
  • The signs are often worse in winter, presumably because the horses are stabled more and cannot get away from the mites in the environment
