Drugs that athletes take to improve their chances of winning

They stimulate the circulatory & nervous system which speeds up reactions
Make you feel alert & confident
You can work harder without feeling pain & fatigue
What are Narcotic Analgesics?
Painkillers that help athletes compete or train even if they are injured
What are Anabolic Steroids?
Hormones that help repair muscle & bone
They are natural & can also be artificially made
Athletes use them to increase the size & strength of the muscles
What are Diuretics?
Increase the amount of water excreted in urine
Athletes use them to lose weight & to flush out banned substances
What are Beta blockers &
Tranquilizers?
They Help to relax & reduce anxiety
What are Peptide Hormones, Mimetics & Analogues?
Natural or Artificial hormones that :
Increase size & strength of muscles
Repair damaged tissue
Increase the red blood cell count - to improve your blood’s ability to carry oxygen
What is Blood Doping?
Injecting more of your blood into your body before competition, making it more efficient at carrying oxygen

1999, to combat drugs in sports through education, strong leadership & scientific research
