What is medicine
drugs that are used to prevent diseases or other conditions
medicines that fight pathogens
pathogens- infectious agents that cause disease. antibodies- kill or stop spread of disease, antiviral- suppresses symptoms doesn’t cures, anti fungal- cream, cure or suppresses, i.e. athletes foot.
tolerence
the boy of the substance user needs more and more of the drug to get the same effect
addiction cycle
tolerance, phycological dependence, physiological dependence, addiction
withdrawal
when a person stops using a medicine on which he/she has developed a chemical dependence
what is illicit drug use
the use or sale of any substance that is illegal or otherwise not permitted
factors that influence decisions about drugs
peer pressure, family, role models, media, perceptions
what is an overdose
a strong sometimes fatal reaction to taking a large amount of a drug
what is addiction
a physiological or psychological dependence on a drug
difference between physiological and psychological dependence
psychological- when a person thinks a drug is necessary to feel good. phycological- when the user has a chemical need for a drug
how is marijuana used? how can it effect your heatlh?
marijuana is typically smoked, however it can be ingested as well. dizziness, trouble walking, memory loss, increase testosterone in females, lower testosterone in males
what is euphoria
when a large amount of dopamine is realesed in the brain creating a feeling of elation
THC/ how long it can stay in body
the main psychoactive drug in marijuana. stored in body fat and blood for as long as a month
How inhalants work
substances whose fumes are sniffed and inhaled to achieve a mind altering affect. Kills brain cells and permanently damages nervous system and brain.
