What are ethics?
Rules that dictate an individuals conduct

Unacceptable behaviour within a culture that differs from the perceived social or legal norm
what is an example of deviance in sport?

What is blood doping?
‘The misuse of techniques and/or substances to increase one’s red blood cell count’ (WADA)
What type of athlete uses blood doping?
An endurance athlete, for example Lance Armstrong
What are three main performance enhancing drugs?
- Anabolic steroids
- Beta blockers (control heart rate and keep athlete calm)
- Stimulants (increase athlete’s awareness)
What are examples of prohibited methods of performance enhancing drugs?
- Enhancement of oxygen transfer
- Blood doping
- Gene doping
What are legal supplements?
They are freely available (like vitamins and minerals) and are still within the bounds of acceptable fair play
What are the advantages of legal supplements?
Weight control
Improving flexibility
Rehydrating
What are the disadvantages of legal supplements?
They could contain banned substances unaware to the athlete
What are the reasons for doping and illegal drugs?
- Pressure to succeed
- Political pressure
- Monetary rewards
- ‘Everyone else is taking them so why wouldn’t I?’
What are the consequences and implications of drugs and doping?
- Dangers to health and well-being
- Loss of sporting reputation
- Affects society and role models
What are the strategies for stopping the use of illegal drugs in sport?
- WADA founded by the IOC in 1999
- Random drugs testing
