what is one treatment for breast cancer and how does it work?
FASLODEX/fulvestrant - ER antagonist
what is one treatment for prostate cancer and how does it work?
flutamide - blocks testosterone
what type of drug is isoproterenol?
agonist
3 human insulin analogs
- Lispro - short acting, rapid absorbed (humalog)
- Aspart - short acting, rapid absorbed (novolog)
- Glargine HOE901 - long acting, peakless, low rates of hypoglycemia (lantus)
what causes congenital adrenal hyperplasia?
steroid 21-hydroxylase deficiency (CYP21A2)
symptoms of congenital adrenal hyperplasia?
- infertility
- vomiting
- dehydration
- reduced aldosterone and cortisol production
how do you diagnose congenital adrenal hyperplasia?
increased 17-hydroxyprogesterone
symptoms w/ aldosterone synthase deficiency? (CYP11B2)
needed for Na+ re-uptake -> electrolyte imbalance, vomiting, dehydration
-infants!
why is it important to monitor glucose levels in critical care patients?
they tend to have high glucocorticoid levels, which causes higher blood glucose due to more gluconeogenesis
two causes of Cushing syndrome
90% exogenous: too many glucocorticoids (prednisone, dexamethasone)
10% endogenous: ACTH-secreting pituitary adenoma
symptoms of Cushing syndrome
- moon face
- truncal obesity
- buffalo hump
- increased appetite b/c cortisol increases lipolysis
what is hypothyroidism caused by?
- iodine deficiency
- autoimmune (Hashimoto thyroiditis)
how is hypothyroidism treated?
thyroid hormone replacement therapy
how can you determine if hypothyroidism is autoimmune or not? (what test)
test for TPO (thyroid peroxidase)
symptoms of hypothyroidism
- fatigue
- some weight gain
- high cholesterol
