What are drugs?
Substances which have a physiological effect when ingested
What are the 2 main types of drugs?
Recreational drugs and medicinal drugs
What are medicinal drugs?
Drugs used in medicine to treat the symptoms of a condition but cause harm if taken in the wrong way
What are recreational drugs?
Drugs taken for enjoyment, to help relax, help to stay awake. No health benefits and harmful. Most are illegal
What are some common medicinal drugs?
Paracetamol, cough medicine, antibiotics
What are some legal recreational drugs?
Caffeine, tobacco, alcohol
What are some illegal drugs?
Cannabis, ecstasy, heroin, cocaine
How does heroin effect the body?
Slows down heart rate + breathing, collapsed veins, skin infections, mental disorders
Effects of paracetamol on body?
Blocks chemical pain messengers
Effects of tobacco on body?
Heart + lung disease, respiratory issues
Effects of cocaine on body?
faster heart rate, raised body temperature, feeling sick, extra confidence, panic attacks
Effects of alcohol on body?
Slurred speech, blurred vision, loss of balance/coordination, impaired judgement, liver + heart + brain disease
Effect of ibuprofen on body?
Treats aches, pains and inflammation
What is an addiction?
When your body becomes dependent on a drug so you need to take it to feel normal. If you try to stop taking the drug you will experience withdrawal symptoms which may include headaches, anxiety and sweating
