DRUG DOSING AND SELF POISONING Flashcards
1
Q
HOW DO SSRI’S WORK?
A
- Block the reuptake of serotonin = more serotonin to bind to the post synaptic receptors
2
Q
VENLAFAXINE AND DESVENLAFAXINE CONSIDERATIONS
A
Both SNRI’s
Serotin and norad reuptake inhibitors
have cardiotoxic/sodium channel blocking activity
3
Q
What are MAOI’s
A
- Mitochondrial enzyme that degrades NT’s such as serotonin and NAD
- Distributed between brain, gut and liver
- Inhibit the enzymes breakdown of NT’s = increase levels of NT’s
4
Q
AMIODARONE- how does it work
A
- Increases refractory period in all cardiac tissues
- Decreases automaticity of fibres in purkinje system
- Prolongs AV conduction
- Blocks K+, na+ and Ca++ channels on beta receptors
- Side effects are hypotension and bradycardia
5
Q
why does giving adrenaline to quetiapine cause hypotension
A
- Causes alpha blockade, if we give adrenaline we can have a paradoxical effect
- Adrenaline is alpha and beta, and with alpha blockade there will be more beta, which will cause profound hypotension
- Not a complete contraindication, as only “some” have this paradoxical effect
- Consider pressors over adrenaline
