What is the generic name of a drug?
Give one example.
The chemical or actual drug name.
I.e. paracetamol.
Where is medicine applied if taken orally?
Taken by the mouth.
Where is medicine applied if it is administered intravenously (IV)?
Given by injection into a vein.
Where is medicine applied if administered intramuscularly (IM)?
Into a muscle.
Where is medicine applied if it is administered subcutaneously (SC)?
Beneath the skin.
What does the ocular route mean?
Placed in the eye.
What does the optic route mean?
Placed in the ear.
What does intrathecally mean?
Into the space around the spinal cord.
What does sublingually mean?
Placed under the tongue.
What does buccally mean?
Placed between the gums and cheek.
Define intraosseous (IO).
Process of injecting directly into the marrow of the bone.
Define intraperitoneal.
Within or administered through the peritoneum.
How do you administer a subcutaneous injection?
What angle? Where?
In the scruff of the neck.
First swab the skin. Then go in at a 45 degree angle. Draw needle back to ensure there is no blood, then inject.
What is the maximum volume of drug that can be administered intramuscularly?
5mls in dogs and 2mls in cats.
Name three intramuscular sites.
Quadriceps - hind limb.
Any muscle masses.
Lumbo-dorsal (epaxial).
Name two intravenous sites.
Cephalic.
Saphenous.
How do you administer an intramuscular injection?
What angle?
First swab skin.
Insert needle at 90 degrees, draw back (shouldn’t be any blood), massage area afterwards.
How do you administer an intravenous injection?
First you need to clip the hair and then swab the skin. The vein will need to be raised, then draw back to check for blood before injecting.
Could be given as bolus, or slowly over several seconds. Or as an infusion (I.e. added to fluids).
