Drug Action in the Eye Flashcards
Name the five stages of drug activity in the body?
Administation, absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion
What are the two branches of the ANS?
Sympathetic and parasympathetic
What is a word used to describe drugs that act on the sympathetic NS?
Adrenergic drugs
What is the action of Apraclonidine?
Reduce IOP by reduced acqeuous humour formation, adrenergic agonist
What is the action of brimonidine?
Reduced IOP by reducing acqueous humour formation, adrenergic-agonist
What is the action of Pilocarpine?
Causes constriction of the pupil as a cholinergic agonist, opens trabecular meshwork and lowers IOP as a result.
What is the action of timolol?
Beta-blocker that blocks production of acqeouos, sympathetic antagonist
What neurotransmitter acts on the parasympathetic NS
Acetylcholine
What neurotransmitter controls the sympathetic NS?
Noradrenaline
What receptors are active in the parasympathetic nervous system?
Muscarinic receptors
What receptors are contained in the adrenergic nervous system?
Alpha and beta receptors
What system control the pupil sphincter?
The parasympathetic nervous system controls the pupil sphincter
What system controls the ciliary muscle?
Parasympathetic innervation causes contraction, resulting in the lens taking up an accommodated state, to relax the lens a cholinergic antagonist is needed
What system innervates the pupil dilator?
Sympathetic nervous system controls dilation of pupil
