Drone Regulations (15-25% of test) Flashcards
How light do drones have to be to not register with the FAA
< 250 gm to not register
Extra:
And less than 250 gms to do people fly overs. “Category 1 small unmanned aircraft are permitted to operate over people, provided the small unmanned aircraft: Weigh 0.55 pounds or less, including everything that is on board or otherwise attached to the aircraft at the time of takeoff and throughout the duration of each operation. Contain no exposed rotating parts that would cause lacerations.” Per FAA website
How often must a drone pilot Certification be renewed?
Every 24 months.
True or False) An individual may not act as the remote PIC of more than one UA at any given time.
True
True or False) The person operating the controls is not required to be certified, as long as they are under the direct supervision of a certified remote PIC?
True
What is a ”Safe Mode”? (3)
A pre-programmed holding pattern, hovering, or the activating of a “return home” feature.
During “Autonomous Operation” the PIC must be able to do what 3 things?
Change the route or the altitude during the flight and tell the aircraft to land if necessary.
The PIC is required to report all accidents involving their sUAS within what length of time?
10 days
Under what conditions must an accident be reported?
If the either of the following is true:
- Serious injury occurred to any person or any loss of consciousness.
- Damage occurred to any property or aircraft that has market value AND repair cost greater than $500. Both value AND repair costs have to be > $500.
WHERE must accident reports be submitted? (2 options)
FAA Regional Operations Center (ROC)
or
filed online with www.faa.gov/uas
Accident reports need to contain the following 11 pieces of information:
1) PIC name
2) PIC contact info
3) FAA cert. # of airman
4) registration # for sUAS
5) Location
6) Date
7) Time
8) Extent of injury
9) Names of injured
10) Extent of property damage
11) Description of accident
A sUAS registration is required under what 3 conditions?
- Aircraft is under 55 lbs.
- But greater than 0.55 lbs (250 grams)
- And operated under provisions of 14 CFR Part 107 (for work or pay)
What 3 conditions are required by the FAA when labeling a registered sUAS?
1) Label has FAA identification number (or authorized serial number)
2) Marking is durable
3) Is easily accessible without tools
What does the FAA not allow for cargo?
- Hazardous materials as defined by the secretary of state as a risk to health, safety, and property.
What are the time boundaries for daylight conditions that the FAA has for sUAS operations.
- Between beginning of morning civil twilight and end of evening civil twilight.
Per the FAA what must the sUAS be equipped with when operated during civil twilight?
Anti-collision lights that can be seen up to 3 statute miles away
What crewmembers can meet the VLOS requirement per the FAA? (3)
Remote PIC
PMC
VO
VLOS is required by either the remote PIC, person manipulating the controls, and visual observers.
The sUAS must be within the VLOS of its crewmembers at all times during his flight.
sUAS aircraft cannot be flown at a speed greater then… mph & knots?
100 mph
87 knots
sUAS aircraft cannot be flown higher than…
400’ AGL (above ground level)
or
400’ above a structure within a 400’ radius
What are the 8 exemptions needed to pilot a drone only for recreation under United States Code 44809 “Recreational Drone Exemption”?
1) Not for pay / Not for work - Fly for recreational purposes only
2) Follow CBO guidelines - Follow the safety guidelines of a Community Based Organization (CBO)
3) Keep VLOS - Keep you drone in your VLOS
4) Give-Way to aircraft - Always give way and never interfere with manned aircraft
5) Don’t fly in controlled airspace - Get airspace authorization before flying in controlled airspace
6) < 400’ - Do not fly higher than 400ft above the ground in uncontrolled airspace
7) Pass TRUST - Pass an aeronautical knowledge and safety test (TRUST)
8) Drone with registration # - Register and mark your drone
Define “recreational flying”?
Flying only for fun not for income of business purposes.
What are the Civil Small UAS rules also know as?
14 CFR Part 107
or
14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 107
How low does “regulated airspace” begin?
Ground Level / Surface
What happens if you fly in restricted airspace?
Federal fines and or prosecution - Unauthorized flying in restricted airspace is a federal crime
Violators can face fines from the FAA and additional prosecution from law enforcement
What does VLOS mean for the PIC.
The PIC must keep the sUAS in your visual line of sight at all times. Able to see the actual drone in flight without the use of binoculars, cameras, or other devices.
If using FPV goggles or if you expect to look at your control station for most of the flight, what must you have?
You must use a visual observer to watch the drone during flight. They will keep the drone in sight at all times.
Who’s responsibility is it to see and avoid manned aircraft regardless of altitude or authorization?
The remote PIC
Even if the sUAS is under 250 grams and flown under the Exception for Recreational Flyers, what must it have?
The FAA registration number displayed or “marked” on the outside surface of the drone.
