- Not depart trains ahead of schedule
What is a drivers duty of care?

Why is a roster book important?
It is an essential tool to allow drivers to be at work on time and aware of the work allocated throughout the day.
What are the roles of a duty manager?
- Coordinating injury management of Drivers and other Train service staff
- Manage drivers after traumatic events
- Provide manager presence after hours
- Portable radio defects or if lost or stolen

What is the role of a Driver Allocation Officer (DAO)?
- the make sure all trains have a driver allocated
- reallocating drivers in regards to disruptions
- informing drivers of altered runs or platform changes
- implementing roster / shift changes at short notice
What are the steps to handing over a train?
- Stop at correct position on PLT
- Identify relieving driver by talking to them
- Observe Metro ID
- Advise the condition of the train and any defects that will impact the operation of the train
- Inform the relief of any safety critical documentation
- If no relief, call the DAO
What are the steps to taking over train as a relief?
- Be in position at the required time/location
- Talk to relieved driver
- Show metro ID
- Inspect Train malfunction messages and Cab notices
- Read and endorse any safety critical documentation
- Set up cab
- Insert TDN
What must a driver do when operating through a section?
- regulate the speed of a train
- KALOF and obey all fixed, hand, detonating and flag signals
- make sure their entire train is following
- look for train defects of anything protruding outside of the train
- ensure no one is attempting to board or alight the train when the train making an unscheduled stop
What must be considered when driving in poor visibility?
Drivers must approach fixed signals cautiously and assume each signal is at the safest position (stop)
If a driver sees a train stopped on the opposite line and is obscured from view, the train whistle must be sounded
Who are allowed to detrain (get off the train) mid section for the leading car?
Track maintenance inspectors conducting track patrol duties
Who is responsible for ensuring the correct route is set at a junction?

What must a driver do when a fixed signal is at stop at departure time?
If the appropriate fixed signal is not at proceed at least 15 seconds prior to departure time. The driver must ensure the reverser is in neutral (Off position in Comeng) and make immediate enquiries.
All delays over 3 minutes must be reported to train control
When running empty cars, what can drivers encounter?
- Restrictive signal aspects
- Pedestrians unaware of the unscheduled service

When will station staff assist with detraining?
- At Flinders St RWS

- changing ends and shunting in the opposite direction

- train related fault (eg. Critical fault with no station staff available)
When the train is out of service and station staff are helping, the driver must:
- Make PA announcement
- CCTV
- Make further announcements or use automated one
- Close door once station staff give the alright hand signal
When the train is to be inspected by the driver (going out of service), the driver must:
- PA Announcement
- CCTV
- Automated announcement
- Close door once train is clear
When must a driver act under any signal aspects encountered?

What speed can drivers do when track clear and not following trains?
Drivers can do track speed or close to but being fully aware that any signal may be displaying a different aspect
How can you reduce the risk of an accident occurring around stations, pedestrians and level crossings?
- use a long whistle
- travel at a reduced speed
- head lights on high beam
How can you ensure the doors have released?
Firmly press the door release button for 2 seconds
When a train is stopped at a station with a fixed signal at danger, the driver must:
- ensure the train brakes are applied
- make sure the marker lights are set to white
- put the train into neutral or off (Comeng)
How long are most PLT’s?
6.5 car lengths
What is in place to assist drivers in stopping at the correct mark on a PLT?
- 3 car mark

Once saloon doors are closed, what must the driver not do?
Reopen on the doors. Unless, there’s a defective whistle or an emergency situation arises
What is the departure procedure - PLT Viewing infrastructure - Not viewable? (Viewing monitor not working)
- Go to a position where all passengers are viewable
- When departure signal is at proceed (if provided) and passenger requirements are complete, close the saloon doors using most suitable button
