Category B - BEFORE 1/1/1997
Allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8250kg maximum.
CATEGORY B - AFTER 1/1/1997
Allowed to drive vehicles up to 3500kg MAM with 8 passenger seats & trailer up to 750kg.
Category BE
Can drive a vehicle up to 3500kg with trailer. Size of trailer varies depending on before or after 19/01/2013.
Category C1
Can drive vehicles between 3500kg and 7500kg MAM (trailer up to 750kg)
Category C1E
Can drive C1 vehicles with trailer over 750kg, cannot pass 12,000kg total.
Category C
Can drive vehicles over 3500kg (trailer up to 750kg MAM)
Category CE
Can drive category C vehicles with trailer over 750kg

How does an employer check a license?
- Get the employee to go on the government website ‘view or share a driving license’ and generate a code.
- Employer uses this code from the employee and goes on the same website with that and the last 8 characters of the driving license.
What details can be checked on a driving license?
- Expiry date
- Entitlements are correct
- Driver CPC card is issued and current
- Drive tachograph is issued and current
- Driver meets minimum age requirements.
