drive - definitions Flashcards
What does white matter contain?
Myelinated axons
What does grey matter contain?
contains cell bodies and no myelon sheets
What is the function of oligodendrocytes?
To myelinate axons in the brain (CNS)
What is the function of Schwann cells?
To myelinate axons to the rest of the body (other than the brain) (PNS)
What is a tract (general)
The location of a pathway
What is a commissure (general)?
Tract connecting one hemisphere to the other, tracts that cross the midline
What are lemnisci?
narrow strips of fibres
What are funiculi?
rope or cord
What are fasiculi?
bundle
What is a capsule (in neuro)?
Sheet of white matter fibres that border a nucleus of grey matter
What is a column (in neuro)?
Longitudinally running fibres separated by other structures
What is the cortex?
Laminated grey matter
What are nuclei (in neuro)
A collection of nerve cell bodies with the CNS
What are ganglia?
Collection of nerve cell bodies outside the CNS
What does afferent axons do?
Take information towards the CNS
What do efferent axons do?
The take information to another site away from the CNS
What happens at reticular?
Grey and white matter mix
What are sulci?
Grooves
What are gyri?
Ridges
What area of brain is referred to as the prosencephalon?
The forebrain
What area of brain is referred to as the mesencephalon
The midbrain
What area of brain is referred to as the rhombencephalon?
The hindbrain
What area of brain is referred to as the telencephalon?
Cerebral hemisphere and lateral ventricles
What area of brain is referred to as the diencephalon?
Thalamus, hypothalamus and third ventricle
