drive - CSF Flashcards
What does CSF stand for?
Cerebrospinal fluid
In what space does the CSF circulate?
The subarachnoid space and within ventricles
How are the ventricles and subarachnoid spaces connected?
Cisterns
How many ventricles are there?
4
What does CSF contain? (4)
Protein, urea, glucose and salts
What produces CSF?
Ependymal cells in the choroid plexuses
Where are the choroid plexuses found?
In the lateral ventricles
Through what is CSF absorbed?
Via arachnoid granulations (in the superior sagittal sinus)
What is hydrocephalus?
An abnormal accumulation of CSF in the ventricular system
What is hydrocephalus often caused by?
A blocked cerebral aqueduct
Why does a blockage cause problems? (in the case of hydrocephalies)
As it causes a build up of pressure
Adults = damage brain tissue (as skull is hard)
Children = skull will bulge and look abnormal and brain damaged (as skull is still soft)
