The process by which the personality of a fictitious character is revealed through the character’s speech, actions, appearance, thoughts
Indirect characterization
People, animals, or objects who do the acting in a play
Characters
In parenthesis or italics to give extra information to the actors
Stage directions
A conversation between two (or more) characters
Dialogue
A solitary speech in which is the character is speaking to himself or herself
Soliloquy
A piece of literature where the story is meant to be acted
Drama/play
A character breaks the fourth wall to interact with the audience
Aside
A solitary speech in which the actor is speaking uninterruptedly and the other characters may or may not be listening
Monologue
When the author makes statements about a character’s personality directly to the reader
Direct characterization
Characters that do not change throughout the course of a work
Static characters
Complex and undergo development, sometimes sufficiently to surprise the reader
Dynamic characters
Characters that are underdeveloped in a text
Flat characters
Characters that are well developed in a text
Round characters
An object representing another to give it an entirely different meaning that is much deeper and more significant
Symbol
A literary device in which a writer gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story
Foreshadowing
A situation in which the outcome is contrary to what was expected
Situational irony
A comment that conveys a different meaning than what it may seem to be
Verbal irony
A situation that is understood by the audience but not grasped by characters in the play or story
Dramatic irony
A person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something; an adversary
Antagonist
The leading character or one of the major characters in a drama, movie, novel, or other fictional text
Protagonist
A story with a double meaning
Allegory
Words that paint a picture
