The Human Context
- drama involves stepping into an imagined world
- to make the imaginary world meaningful and
purposeful, it must have aspects of the real world
Roles and Relationships
Relationships are central to dramatic action
relationships between people
the relationships between people and ideas
the relationship between people and the environment.
Roles and Relationships
We are able to set up relationships in our dramas by taking on roles.
When you take on a role you are simply representing a point of view.
Taking on a role involves identifying with a particular set of values and attitudes, which may or may not be your own.
Developing a Role
When you are developing a role, you need to develop a complex
personality and background for your character – characterisation.
There are 3 basic aspects of role to take into account when
improvising
Purpose, Status and Attitude
Purpose
PURPOSE is a character’s aim. The reason they say and do certain things.
Status
STATUS all relationships have an element of power in them. A role will have a high, low or equal status.
Attitude
ATTITUDE is the way the character thinks and behaves. Each character has attitudes towards the subject matter and other characters.
Purpose, status and attitude all form part of a character’s MOTIVATION. This refers to what a character hopes to achieve.
