Drag Queens Flashcards
What is Philipsens speech code theory
Groups such as drag queens develop their own speech codes, unwritten code for how they should speak
What is the code of sisterhood (simmon)
By speaking this way they are upholding family values, their family being the queens they are surrounded by. Language is meant to be empowering and build confidence
Style switching (Stephen Mann)
Drag queens use three styles of English
Gay mens English (GME)
African- American vernacular English (AAVE)
White women’s English (WWE)
What did Goffman propose
The process of socialisation is a way of learning how to play assigned roles and negotiate a desired impression on a stage. The performance is not only a recreation but also a creation of a speakers identity (not only a performance but a representation of their identity)
What is a speech community (Moore)
Drag lingo is used to disable and decouple univocal conceptions of biology, gender and sexuality
What is staged language
Very distinct way of speaking to meet needs of an audience, it has its own system and meaning of vocabulary understood by the audience
What is refree design
Use of linguistic features to reach a targeted audience
What is Hymes speech community
A community sharing knowledge of rules for the conduct and interpretation of speech
Gender crossing
Typical linguistic feature of gay male communities involving the use of grammatical forms and female kinship terms (sister, mother, daughter and queen to refer to men)
What is Johnsen’s gender inversion
Consists in using female pronouns and adjectives to refer to men most frequent in gay subcultures as it conveys an understanding of gender as a construction as something we do rather than something we are
Grammatical gender crossing
Transgresses heteronormative genderbinarism by suggesting contestants are both male and female
Paralinguistic feature of drag queens (Simmons)
Non verbal gestures are more feminine than masculine (excessive amount of gestures)
