Drag and stall Flashcards
What is drag
The force which tends to move an object when placed in an airflow
The resistance to a body
moving in still air
What are the three types of drag
Profile Drag (Form Drag+Skin Friction)
Interference Drag
Induced Drag
What is form drag
Drag produced by the shape of the aircraft
What is skin friction
The friction of the aircraft skin against the relative airflow
A rough surface slows the air flow down more than the
smooth surface.
What is interference drag
Drag caused by converging airflows.
eg wing to fuselage junctions (B-24 Liberator)
What is induced drag
The drag created as a direct result of lift
What is planform
The shape or outline of an aircraft wing (as projected upon a horizontal plane)
What are some common wing planforms
Delta
Swept back
Elliptical
Tapered
What is the relationship between lift and weight
An aircrafts increased weight means increased drag
What is aspect ratio
Aspect ratio = Total Wing span/Mean Chord
The ratio of a wings span to its mean chord. It is equal to the square of the wingspan divided by the wing area.
A long, narrow wing has a high aspect ratio, A short, wide wing has a low aspect ratio
How does speed affect drag
INCREASED SPEED means lower Angle of Attack which means LESS DRAG
What is aileron drag
When the up going wing (down going aileron) causes increased lift over the wing, it also causes an increase in drag
what are four methods of alleviating Aileron drag
