Define ‘Perception’.
Perception is the process of using the senses to become aware of / to gain knowledge of something.
Define ‘Object’.
An object is a thing that exists.
Define ‘Property’.
A Property is a characteristic of an object.
Define ‘Ontological’.
Ontological describes something relating to what kinds of thing exist and their nature.
Define ‘Realism’.
Realism is the view that at least some mind-independent objects exist.
Define ‘Anti-Realism’.
Anti-realism is the view that no mind-independent objects exist.
Define ‘Mind-Independent’.
Mind-independent describes an object or property is mind-independent if it exists independently of all minds and independently of any experience of it.
Define ‘Mind-Dependent’.
Mind-dependent describes an object or property is mind-dependent if it only exists within a mind.
Define ‘The External World’.
The External world is the reality that consists of all mind-independent objects and their mind-independent properties.
Define ‘Immediate Perception’.
Immediate perception describes something perceived without this being by or through perceiving something else.
Summarise ‘Direct Realism’.
Direct Realism is a theory in Epistemology that proposes that we are directly aware of objects that we perceive.
State the claims made by ‘Direct Realism’.
(MAIN) The immediate objects of perception are mind-independent objects and their properties.
1) Realism - At least some mind Independent objects exist.
2) Direct perception of the External World - The immediate objects of awareness during perception are mind-independent objects/properties - so we are directly aware of the mind-independent external world during perception.
3) Knowledge of External World - We can have knowledge of the External World through this direct perception of it.
