DPH Flashcards
What are the principles of population health approach
Identify why certain oral diseases are more prevalent in specific population groups
Your role as a health professional and working with social and other health workers
Identifying barriers and challenges patients have in maintaining their health
Identifying factors that affect oral health programmes and dental services
What is DPHs focus
Prevention of oral disease
Promotion of oral health
Improving quality of life
Through society
Wat is a risk factor
Personal characteristics, behaviour, or environmental factor that can increase an individuals likelihood of getting disease
Can be modifiable or non modifiable
Protective factors are the opposite
They are not necessarily causal
Why is preventing oral disease important?
Oral disease are common, and largely preventable, they have a long term impact on individual, and costly to treat
How much money does NHS spend on dental services yearly?
3.4billion
How do we know sugar consumption causes caries?
Stephans curve - plaque ph studies- ph dropped after sucrose rinse
Vipeholm study - link between sugar intake and dental caries incidence
Turku study - finland - effect of artificial sweeteners which replaced sucrose = reduced caries 85%
Describe Vipeholm study
1945-1955 in sweden
Fed mental institute patients with sweets and recorded dental caries incidence
Effect of number of sugar attacks- freq plus conc

TOH = 50% London = 63%
Prevalence of caries in 5yr olds in TOH and London average in 2014/2015
TOH = 35.5% London = 27.4%
Describe steps in a patient preventative strategy
Identify their problem - history n examination
Diagnose the problem
Provide a treatment plan - take consent etc
Carry it out
Patient follow up
Plus dont just be surgically focused, must also give preventive advice on diet n oral hygiene maintenance
Steps for a population preventive strategy
Identify populations oral health needs - what is the problem
Identify and tackle determinants, causal and risk factors
Develop a preventive strategy to address it
- whole pop
- high risk pop
- directed pop
Implement strategy
Evaluate efficacy
