What are the 3 different types of Down syndrome?
1- trisomy 21: 3 separate copies of chromosome 21. 95% most common
2- translocation: part or all of an extra chromosome 21 attaches to another chromosome
3- mosaic: some cells have 3 copies, and some cells have 2
What are the associated risks of DS?
-Congenital heart defect
-Hip dislocation
-Thyroid disease
What are the prenatal diagnosis of DS?
-Short femur
-Sandal toe gap ***
What are the PT interventions for DS?
Safety, developmental milestones, strength, balance, coordination, motor planning, gait and function
What are the precautions when working with a child with DS?
-Atlantoaxial instability
-Joint dislocation
-Feeding difficulty
-Cardiac
