What dose adrenaline do you give for adult anaphylaxis?
0.5mg = 0.5ml of 1 in 1000IM
What dose adrenaline do you give for adult cardiac arrest?
1mg = 10ml of 1 in 10000 IV
What’s the maximum paracetamol dose over a day?
4g
This includes paracetamol tablets (500mg) AND co-codamol (30mg codine and 500mg paracetamol in each tablet).
Risky if patients are taking BOTH!!
Generally how much fluid does an adult need daily? How would you prescribe it?
3L over 24 hours
Therefore 1L/ 8 hours x 3
2 sweet (dextrose) one salt (saline)
Plus 40mmol KCL (no more than 10mmol/hour)
How much fluid do elderly people need per day and how would you prescribe it?
2 L over 24 hour
1 bag/ 12 hourly. x2
What’s the normal dose of aspirin ?
75mg daily - cardio protection
300mg daily - treatment for ACS or stroke
How would you prescribe acetylcysteine to a 70kg person following a large overdose of paracetamol?
IV infusion with glucose 5%, based on table in BNF (57ml in 70kg) in first and infuse over 1 hour.
Then see second and third doses in BNF.
Which medications are taken weekly?
Alendronate
Methotrexate
Doses for anaphylaxis in children?
Ad : 300mg IM
Hydro: 100mg IV
Chlor: 5mg IV
What’s the loading dose for aminophylline?
5mg/kg IV over at least 20mins.
What’s the max dose of allopurinol in someone with reduced renal function?
100mg/daily
As it can accumulate in renal dysfunction
Treatment of thrush in pregnancy?
Clotrimazole pessary 100mg PV daily for 7 days.
No oral anti fungals in preg. Extend course of 7 days treatment in preg.
By what increments should you titrate levothyroxine by?
25-50micrograms (or smallest increment possible)
Increasing phenytoin dose?
Narrow therapeutic window so smallest increment possible
Normal starting dose for amitriptyline?
10mg
