Dosimetry Protection Standards Flashcards
List the four documents pertaining to the radiation health program.
P-5055
Radiological Controls (RADCON) for Ships
RAD-010 Radiological Affairs Support Program (RASP) Manual
Nuclear Weapons Radiological Controls Program SSP OD 96206
(probably low yield overall, but an objective)
What is the purpose of the Radiation Health Protection Program?
- Detect and identify radiation and contamination hazards.
- Determine, Evaluate, and Document Personnel Exposures.
- Perform RMEs
- Submit required reports and maintain applicable records.
- Providing Training.
- Assisting in CBRE (Chem, Bio, Radio and Environmental) Defense.
What is the federal limit to a radiological worker to the following places:
- TEDE
- Shallow Dose Equivalent
- Extremities
- Eye Dose Equivalent
- Pregnant Worker Dose
- Organ Dose
- Members of the Public
- Non-Radiation Workers
- TEDE: 5rem/yr, 3 rem/qtr
- Shallow Dose Equivalent: 50rem
- Extremities: 50rem
- Eye Dose Equivalent: 15rem
- Pregnant Worker Dose: 500mrem/pregnancy, 50mrem/month
- Organ Dose: 50rem
- Members of the Public: 100mrem
- Non-Radiation Workers: 500mrem
Define a Controlled Area per the P-5055. Note This is the only definition for this term.
An area outside of a restricted area but inside the site boundary, access to which can be limited by the activity for any reason.
Define a Restricted Area per the P-5055.
Note This is the only definition for this term.
An area limited by the command for the purpose of protecting individuals against undue risks from exposure to radiation and radioactive materials.
Define a Radiation Area per the P-5055 and compare that to the definition per NNPP.
P-5055: Any Accessible Area in which an individual could receive a deep dose equivalent in excess of 5mRem/hr at 30cm/1ft from the radiation source or from any surface that the radiation penetrates.
NNPP: Accessible Area where a major portion of the body could bee exposed to radiation levels >/= 1mRem/hr but less than 100mRem/hr.
Define a High Radiation area per the P-5055 and compare that to the definition per NNPP.
P-5055: Any Accessible Area in which an individual could receive a deep dose equivalent in excess of 100mRem/hr at 30cm/1ft from the radiation source or from any surface that the radiation penetrates.
NNPP: Accessible Area where a major portion of the body could bee exposed to radiation levels >/= 100mRem/hr.
Define a Very High Radiation Area per the P-5055. Note that this is the only definition for this term.
Any area, accessible to personnel in which there exist ionizing radiation at such levels that an individual could receive in excess of 500 RAD in 1 hour at 1 meter from the radiation source or from any surface the radiation penetrates.
Define an Airborne Radioactivity Area per the P-5055. Note that this is the only definition for this term.
A room, enclosure, or area in which airborne radioactive materials exist in concentrations greater than a DAC or such that an individual could receive more than 0.6% of an ALI without respiratory protective equipment in a week.
Define an Exclusion Area per the NNPP. Note that this is the only definition for this term.
Area where access would result in personnel exceeding a radiation exposure limit in a very short time.
Define a Contamination Area per the NNPP. Note that this is the only definition for this term.
Any uncontrolled area that has a loose beta/gamma above 450pCi/100cm2 or loose alpha contamination above 50pCi/100cm2. (Note these are the limits for loose contamination)
Define a High Airborne Area per the NNPP. Note that this is different than the Airborne Radioactivity Area of the P-5055.
Any uncontrolled area that has airborne concentration above the limits.
What is the purpose of a Local Control Level or Administrative Control Level?
To further minimize personnel exposure As Low As Reasonable Achievable (ALARA).
State the dose limits and local control levels for the NNPP program:
- Pregnant Workers
- Limited Radiation Workers
- Non-Radiation Workers
- General Radiation Worker
- Pregnant Workers: 500mrem/pregnancy, 50mrem/month
- Limited Radiation Workers: 100 mrem
- Non-Radiation Workers: 100 mrem
- General Radiation Worker: As many as possible <500mRem/yr.
State the dose limits and Administrative control levels for RASP:
- Occupational workers:
- Non-Radiation workers:
- Minors:
THE SAME AS IN THE P-5055.
- Occupational workers: 1/10th of the federal limits (500mrem)
- Non-Radiation workers: 100mrem
- Minors: 100mrem
