Area Survey Flashcards
Explain the reasons for Area Survey per NNPP.
Performed as necessary to ensure personnel do not exceed rad exposure limits/to meet requirements for point rad areas.
Also to determine if abnormal radiation levels exist and to determine the extent and magnitude of radiation levels.
Explain the reasons for Area survey per Nuclear Weapons.
Done by shore stowage and maintenance facilities to assess radiation levels in selected areas.
Explain the reasons for Area survey per RASP.
Shall be conducted and documented for all fixed facilities classified as an exempt shielded or shielded facility to ensure radiation levels are within regulations.
State the periodicity for an area survey IAW Nuclear Weapons.
- Situationally: survey points concentrated where people are typically located during maintenance/potential alternates.
- Areas outside of Nuclear weapons stowage and maintenance are monitored by area monitors (BAM or NAM) per LiF issue period.
- A representative ship of each class is assigned organizational level maintenance responsibilities with survey results listed in OD69206.
State the periodicity for an area survey IAW NNPP.
Shift, daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annually…etc.
State the periodicity for an area survey IAW RASP.
- Prior to placing a facility into operation
- Every 2 years for all active fixed facilities.
- Whenever there is a change in equipment, shielding, procedures, etc.
- When obvious damage occurs.
- Observed or suspected change to the integrity of the facility shielding.
- Surveys of areas where RAM > listed in table 3 are used/stored shall be performed Q6 months.
- Closeout surveys when operations have terminated.
At shore RADIAC facilities, on what interval are surveys completed?
- Accessible spaces adjacent to each calibration room:
- Where contaminated instruments or sources are handled or stored:
- Semiannually
2. Daily.
When (causes for surveys) are surveys done at Shore RADIAC facilities?
- After receipt of new sources with higher activity than an old source.
- Modification to room which changes shielding integrity.
- Increase in occupancy of adjacent spaces/workload.
- Other action which increases potential for exposures outside the exposure room.
When/How shall there be conducted Gamma Radiography Radiation Surveys.
- RASP approved instruments capable of measuring 2-1000mR/hr.
- Calibrated every 3 months and after each repair or servicing.
- Check instrument for condition of batteries and acceptable response to radiation Qday or shift and after suspected damage.
- Shall not be conducted unless 2 operable, calibrated low-range survey instruments are available.
- Done by a qualified radiographer.
- Surveys of restricted area perimeters shall be conducted by radiation barrier monitor or radiographers.
