Area Monitoring Flashcards
State the Difference between Area Monitors and Environmental dosimeters.
Area Monitors purpose: Accessible areas to ensure that non-radiation workers do not exceed 500 mRem/yr and the general public is not exposed in excess of limits. This is reported in 6470/3.
Environmental Monitoring Purpose: Accessible areas to the general public - to ensure they not likely to exceed a TEDE 100mRem/yr or 2 mRem/hr.
Where are Dosimetric devices in Nuclear Propulsion?
Near the secondary shield of an operating plant, or where operations are performed such as fuel handling, removal, and replacement of control rods, or filling the reactor vessel.
Explain how monitoring ambient photon/beta radiation is measured.
DT-702/PD (TLDs) are used to monitor ambient photon and/or beta radiation. Shall be oriented toward a radiation source, if known.
Explain how monitoring ambient neutron is measured.
- TLD (DT-702/PD) in a polyethylene cylinder that would be similar to an AN/PDR-70 and mounted in accessible areas.
- Neutron Area Monitor (NAM) or BUMED Area Monitor (BAM). These are used to monitor gamma and neutron radiation levels in nuclear weapons stowage and maintenance areas and in occupied spaces.
State the Requirement for monitoring in a dental facility.
For Normal Operations (XR, panoramic, etc.)
1. No requirements for TLDs.
2. Environmental and area monitoring is not required.
For New tech (cone-beam dental CT), these individuals should receive RMEs and spaces should be monitored. ?TLDs…
