What is the EUZ and of which areas does it consist?
Essential User Zone
Consists of AC/TC ops room, technical ops room, D&D
Which people are classed as ‘Essential staff’?
All staff in the ops room either carrying out or required for ATC duties when evacuation order is given
Which people are classed a ‘Non-essential staff’? (x3)
- All staff who are rostered for duty but who are on a break outside the ops room
- All staff who are formally deployed outside the ops room (for training/meetings)
- All staff who are rostered for duty within ops room and designated as non-essential by their watch
What are the 4x evacuation states and their definitions?
- Investigate - when info received is being investigated
- Alarm - when info indicates a fire or threat exists which does not directly or immediately affect the ops room
- Evacuate - when info indicates a fire or threat exists which could directly affect the ops room and evacuation deemed necessary
- Immediate - when fire or threat exists that requires immediate evacuation of ops room. Red evacuation beacons activated on instruction from OS
What are the actions of sector staff during the investigate state?
Normal ATC ops maintained
What are the actions of sector staff during the alarm state?
Evacuation of areas outside the EUZ only - normal ATC ops maintained but consideration given to apply traffic restrictions
What are the actions of sector staff during the evacuate state? (x4)
Evacuation of areas outside the EUZ
- Essential staff disperse traffic and then evacuate (timescale up to 60 mins depending on incident)
- Confirm with GS the timescale and horizon for accepting new traffic
- Disperse traffic in accordance with sector specific action cards
- When dispersal complete, inform GS, vacate building and proceed to assembly point
What are the actions of sector staff during the immediate state?
Immediate evacuation of all staff within and outside the EUZ
- When instructed by OS or GS to evacuate immediately - if safe to do so prior to leaving position:
- make broadcast stated in sector specific procedures
- de-cross couple frequencies
- All staff vacate building and proceed to assembly point
What is the procedure for staff once they have evacuated the building?
Swipe security passes at the Evacuation Muster Building in the car park.
Non-essential staff shall proceed to alphabetical assembly point
What must operational staff NOT in the ops room do following a voice broadcast to vacate?
Vacate the building and report to Evacuated Staff Assembly Point.
Operational staff who do not wish to re-enter the building must proceed to alphabetical muster point after registering at a muster reader
What is a fallback?
A pre-defined reduced level of operational service that is visible to the controller
How do you use the IDA function if the phone panel goes down to call another sector?
Press 5
Press position number (1T, 2P, 3A)
Press sector number
What indications are there that a fallback mode is in operation and what should T and P do?
- Workstation border will go brown
- System text message gives info on failure
- T&P should inform GS and follow fallback procedure on associated checklist
On receipt of an emergency message what are a controllers actions after turning on the speaker? (Acronym)
ASSIST:
- Acknowledge
- Separate and squawk
- Silence
- Inform
- Support
- Time
What is the correct phraseology when an aircraft squawks 7500?
Callsign, confirm you are squawking assigned code (original code)
What is the aimed vertical and horizontal separation of airspace exclusion around a possible hijack when Medusa is enacted?
15nm radius, nothing above or below

What is the difference between a distress and urgency message?
Distress - threatened by serious and/or imminent danger and requiring immediate assistance
Urgency - concern for safety of aircraft or person but does not require immediate assistance
What are the rules for fuel jettisoning?
- Over sea if possible or above 10,000ft
- Exceptionally 7,000ft in winter, 4,000ft in summer
- Must be unavoidable if carried out below these levels
What are the 3x categories of bomb warnings?
- Red - credible threat
- Amber - doubtful credibility but prudent to consider protective measures
- Green - non-credible threat requiring no further action
What are the procedures for pilots experiencing comms failure in IMC? (x3)
1:
- Select 7600
- Maintain speed and assigned level for 7 mins
- Adjust speed and level in accordance with flight plan and continue to appropriate designated landing aid
- Attempt to transmit position reports and flight level on appropriate frequency
2:
- If being vectored continue on hdg for 3 mins then rejoin flight planned route
3:
- Arrive over the designated landing aid at or close to ETA
