(DON'T NEED)The Brain and The Eye Flashcards
What is the cerebellum?
- Responsible for muscle coordination
What is the cerebral cortex?
- This is responsible for things like consciousness, memory, intelligence and language
What is the medulla?
- Responsible for unconscious activities such as breathing and your heartbeat
What is the sclera?
- The tough, supporting wall of the eye (the “white” part of the eye)
What is the Cornea?
- The transparent outer layer at the front of the eye. It refracts light into the eye.
What is the Iris?
- It contains muscles to control the diameter of the pupil, controlling how much light enters the eye
What is the Lens?
- This focuses the light onto the retina
What are Ciliary Muscles and Suspensory Ligaments?
- They control the shape of the lens
What is the Optic Nerve?
- Carries impulses from the receptors on the retina to the brain
What is myopia?
Short sightedness
What is hyperopia?
Long sightedness
What are the two types of receptors in the retina and what colours do they sense?
Rods detect shades of gray and don’t need a lot of light
Cones detect red, green and blue and need light
Which muscle in the iris is at the centre and which muscle is on the circumference?
Circular muscles at the centre
Radial muscles at the circumference
What happens when you try to focus on a distant or near object?
Distant
The ciliary muscles contract
Suspensory ligaments loosen
Lense becomes globular
Near
The ciliary muscles loosen
Suspensory ligament get pulled tight
Lense becomes thin
When does your eye refract the most light, when focusing on distant or near objects?
Distant - less refraction
Near - more refraction
