Q

What is the central nervous system?

A
  • Consists of the spinal cord and the brain only
  • Connected to the rest of the body by sensory neurons and motor neurons
  • Receives information from receptors and then coordinates a response (the response is carried out by the effectors)

Q

What are effectors?

A
  • Muscles and glands which respond to nervous impulses
  • They bring about a change
  • Muscles contract
  • Glands secrete hormones

Q

What is a synapse?

A
  • The connection between two neurons
  • The nerve signal is transferred by chemicals which diffuse across the gap
  • The chemicals then set off a new electrical signal in the next neuron

Q

What is a reflex?

A
  • A rapid and automatic response to a certain stimuli that doesn’t involve the conscious part of the brain, reduce injury

Q

What is the reflex arc?

A
  • The neurons in reflex arcs go through the spinal cord
  • When a stimulus is detected by the effectors, impulses are sent through the sensory neuron to a relay neuron in the CNS
  • When the impulse reaches a synapse, a chemical is released , the chemical causes impulses to be sent through the relay neuron
  • The impulses then travel through the motor neuron to the effector (usually the muscle)
  • The muscle then contracts to move your hand away from the danger
  • This is quicker since you don’t have to think about it
