Q

How is genetic engineering used to make insulin?

A
  • The human gene responsible for making insulin is cut out using an enzyme called restriction enzyme.
  • The plasmid of a bacteria is also cut out using restriction enzymes.
  • The human insulin gene is placed into the plasmid
  • An enzyme called ligase joins the ends of the insulin gene to the cut ends of the plasmid.
  • The plasmid is now called recombinant plasmid or recominant DNA.
  • The recombinant DNA is placed into the bacteria and grown to create insulin.
