Q
How is genetic engineering used to make insulin?
A
- The human gene responsible for making insulin is cut out using an enzyme called restriction enzyme.
- The plasmid of a bacteria is also cut out using restriction enzymes.
- The human insulin gene is placed into the plasmid
- An enzyme called ligase joins the ends of the insulin gene to the cut ends of the plasmid.
- The plasmid is now called recombinant plasmid or recominant DNA.
- The recombinant DNA is placed into the bacteria and grown to create insulin.
