Competition, abiotic and biotic factors Flashcards
1
Q
What is a habitat?
A
The place where an organism lives
2
Q
What is a population?
A
All the organisms of one species living in a habitat
3
Q
What is interdependance?
A
When other species rely on each other
4
Q
What is a community
A
The populations of different species living in a habitat
5
Q
What is an ecosystem?
A
The interaction of a community of living organisms
(biotic) with the non-living (abiotic) parts of their environment.
6
Q
Examples of biotic factors?
A
- New predators
- New pathogens
- Decrease in food (animals)
7
Q
Examples of abiotic factors?
A
- Light intensity
- Temperature
- Moisture levels
- Soil pH and minerals
- Wind intensity and direction
- CO2 levels for plants
- O2 levels for aquatic animals
8
Q
What is a stable community?
A
- All species and environmental factors are in balance
- Number of species remain relatively constant
- Population sizes remain relatively constant
- Established over many years
- Often have a high biodiversity
- Can absorb some change
- Cannot easily be replaced
