Decay, Investigating decay Flashcards
1
Q
Why do the conditions need to be warm for decay?
A
Because decomposers use enzymes to break down dead material so the enzymes work faster in warm conditions. However, if it gets too warm the enzymes could denature.
2
Q
What are the conditions for decay?
A
- Warm
- Moist
- Oxygen rich
3
Q
What happens if decomposers don’t have enough oxygen?
A
Anaerobic decay takes place creating methane (called biogas)
4
Q
What can decayed plant matter be used for?
A
Fertilisers
5
Q
Where is biogas made in industry?
A
In a fermenter called digester or generator.
Digesters need to be kept at a warm temperature
