HTTA
- clear demarcation (eg: glove burn)
- Brusing that looks like the shape of something
- bruising in weird places (eg: not the hands, knees, elbows as these can be due to a fall playing)
- damage to the abdomen or bottocks
- pressure ulcers (elder abuse)
Signs of infant abuse
toddler abuse
Infant:
typically are not cruising until about 9mo. parental reports of “walking and falling” are suspicious.
Toddler:
no separation anxiety
Avoids eye contact
Clear demarcation burns or bruising
Bruising around the abdomen or buttock

what are the Bruising (contusion) stages (color and timeline)
- new bruise: red
- 12 to 36: purple or purple-blue
- progress: to bluish-green to greenish-brown to brownish-yellow
- before fading away
The color of bruises is the same on all people, but skin color may increase or decrease visibility of bruises.
What substances can cause easy bruising in older adults?

Abrasion
A wound caused by rubbing the skin or mucous membrane
Avulsion
The tearing away of a structure or part.
Incision
A cut or wound made by a sharp instrument; the act of cutting.
Hematoma
A localized collection of extravasated blood, usually clotted in an organ, space, or tissue.
Hemorrhage
The escape of blood from a ruptured vessel, which can be external, internal, and/or into the skin or other organ.
Laceration
The act of tearing or splitting; a wound produced by the tearing and/or splitting of body tissue, usually from blunt impact over a bony surface.
Lesion
A broad term referring to any pathologic or traumatic discontinuity of tissue or loss of function of a part.
Traumatic alopecia
Loss of hair from pulling and yanking or by other traumatic means.
The Danger Assessment

how is it used
Begins with a calendar so that women can see for themselves how frequent and severe the violence has become over the past year.
Then a series of 20 yes/no items. Although there are no predetermined cutoff scores on the DA, the more “yes” answers there are, the more serious the danger of the woman’s situation.
