Domain Kingdom Both? Flashcards
What are the two large groups that we classify organisms in?
The plant kingdom
The animal kingdom
What are fungi and which kingdom are they classified in?
Count as plants because they did not move about
The plant kingdom
What happened as technology and scientific knowledge developed?
People began to see the world, such as the microscopic organisms, including bacteria and the single-celled organisms called protocista
What was the new system that submerged and what was it based off?
The five-kingdom classification
Based on morphology
In the five-kingdom classification system, what kingdom are all the prokaryotes put in?
The monera
Where is everything else including the single-celled organisms and algae put in?
Protocista
What is another system that biologists use?
Six kingdom classification system
What does the six kingdom classification system result from?
This results from work done using biochemical and DNA evidence
What is the Archaebacteria?
Prokaryotic cells Ancient bacteria Very wide variety of lifestyle Include extremophiles - bacteria that can survive extreme conditions of heat, cold, pH, salinity, and pressure They normally reproduce asexually
What is Eubacteria?
Prokaryotic cells
Includes the true bacteria and Cyanobacteria, which used to be called the blue-green algae
Normally reproduce asexually
What is the protocista?
Eukaryotic cells
Includes all of the single-celled organisms, the green algae, the brown algae, and slime molds
Organisms that do not fit into the other kingdoms
Mainly reproduce asexually
What are fungi?
Eukaryotic cells Includes both unicellular organisms For example yeasts And the multicellular organisms For example toadstools and molds They are all heterotrophs Reproduce asexually and sexually
What is Plantae?
Eukaryotic cells
organisms in this kingdom are all multicellular
Almost all heterotrophs
Makes their own food by photosynthesis
Include liverworts and mosses, ferns, gymnosperms, and the angiosperms, the true flowering plants
Both asexual and sexual reproduction occurs within this kingdom
What is Animalia?
Eukaryotic cells All multicellular organisms All heterotrophs Include invertebrate and invertebrates Sexual reproduction is common But some animals also reproduce asexually
