Domain 7 Flashcards
Hazardous Material
Any solid, liquid, or gas that can harm people, other living organisms, property, or the environment
Hazardous Waste
“Solid waste” that may pose a hazard, or cause or contribute to an increase in mortality or illness
Four Types of Matter
- Solid
- Liquid
- Gas
- Plasma
Corrosion
Wearing away of metals because of a chemical reaction. Can be caused by exposure to moisture in the air, or certain substances such as acids or bases
Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)
(1976) Governs the disposal of solid waste and hazardous waste. Regulates hazardous waste “from cradle to grave”, including generation, treatment, storage, and disposal of hazardous wastes
Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act
(1980) Known as Superfund. Created a tax on the chemical and petroleum industries and provided broad federal authority to respond directly to release or threatened released of hazardous substances that may endanger public health or the environment. Enabled revision of the National Contingency Plan (NCP)
National Contingency Plan (NCP)
Provided the guidelines and procedures needed to respond to releases and threatened released of hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants. Established the National Priorities List (NPL)
Superfund Amendment and Reauthorization Act
(1986) Made changes and additions to the CERCLA. Required EPA to revise the Hazard Ranking System
Toxic Substances Control Act
(1976) Authorized the EPA to secure information on all new and existing chemical substances, and to control any of the substances that were determined to caused unreasonable risk to public health or the environment
Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act
(1986) Created to help communities plan for emergencies involving hazardous substances
Hazard Communication Standard
29 CFR 1910.1200
Ensure that the hazards of all chemicals produced or imported are evaluated and that information concerning theirs hazards is transmitted to employers and employees
9 Categories of Hazardous Materials (DOT)
Every Good Fire Fighter Ought To Receive Cash Money
1. Explosives
2. Gasses
3. Flammable/combustible liquids
4. Flammable/combustible solids or materials that are spontaneously combustible or dangerous when wet
5. Oxidizers/organic peroxides
6. Toxic and infection substances
7. Radioactive material
8. Corrosives
9. Miscellaneous hazardous materials
Decontamination
The process of removing or neutralizing contaminants that have accumulated on personnel or equipment
Physical hazards associated with materials
- Engulfment
- Over pressurization
- Fires and explosions
- Corrosion
- Thermal decomposition
- Other physical safety hazards
National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
(1970) Establishes national environmental policy and goals for the protection, maintenance, and enhancements of the environment, and provides a process for implementing these goals within the federal agencies
