Volunteer Involvement
Advisory Board
Provides some level of oversight and guidance to a nonprofit organization, but lacks the legal fiduciary obligations of a governing board. It is strategically comprised of individuals with influence, expertise, or prominence in the community.
Board of Directors
Individuals selected in accordance with an organization’s bylaws to oversee management, determine policy, and perform fiduciary obligations of an organization.
Budget
A detailed description of income and expenses for an organization.
Campaign Leadership
The volunteers who make up the core of a capital campaign’s decision makers.
Governance
The process by which a nonprofit board provides strategic leadership through vision casting, policy setting, strategic planning, oversight, and accountability. Governance roles and structures are two key factors that prospective board volunteers review before making a decision to join and/or give, as they are a reflection of “the character and quality of the institution”.
High Net Worth Volunteers
Volunteers whose income and/or assets put them in a position to make a substantial donation to an organization. In addition to the monetary contributions that high net worth individuals make, they often play strategic volunteer roles (board members or consultants) which are often based on their special skill set and experience. 75 percent of high net worth individuals who give to charity also volunteer.
Organizational Readiness
An assessment of an organization’s level of resolve, capacity, and infrastructure necessary to accept and implement a significant change or project.
Roles & Responsibilities (Board)
Can be broken down into four main aspects: adherence to legal obligations, adherence to mission, stewardship of resources, development.
Stewardship of Mission
The responsibility of board and staff to ensure the viability of the organization.
Volunteer Diversity (For Boards)
The process of selecting a board that demonstrates variety in viewpoints, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic levels, age, etc.
Volunteer Orientation (For Boards)
The process of acclimating board members to the organization, its culture, and their roles and expectations.
Volunteer Rentention
The rate at which board members remain committed to volunteering both during and after their terms end. Critical elements of successful retention include engagement, feedback, gratitude, acknowledgment, clear understanding of mission, and sense of purpose.
