Dog behaviour Flashcards
Three reasons dogs were bred for humans?
Companionship
Recreation
Work
Dogs that were bred for “companionship”
Neotony dogs with health issues due to their physiological stature eg pugs.
Dogs that were bred for “Recreation”
Greyhounds: Fast runners, have health problems. They dissect and consume their prey, but do not eye or stalk it.
Dogs that were bred for “work”
Sheepdogs: fast and intelligent, they were bred to kill prey but not to dissect or consume it.
What is the hunting sequence (7)?
Orient - eye - stalk - grab-bite - kill-bite - dissect - consume.
Are displays of dominance overt or subtle?
Can be both.
Is there any linear hierarchy when it comes to a pack of dogs?
No, it is either despotic (all dogs are on the same level except one higher up one - can differ between resources etc) or egalitarian (everyone is on the same page).
