how does basal skin cancer, SCC, and melanoma occur
intense/sun exposure
what does basal cell skin cancer look like
looks like a firm flesh color or red bump; can look like an open area (like a pimple) that bleeds and crests over on an ongoing basis
which type of skin cancer is most common/least deadly?
basal cell skin cancer (unlikely to spread but should still be treated)
what does SCC look like?
looks like a thickened, red, scaly bump/wart like growth; can also be an open sore that crests over and doesn’t heal
how long does it take SCC to grow?
may grow quickly over weeks or take years
what type of skin cancer is least common/most deadly?
melanoma
what is the cure rate for melanoma? (early cases)
95%
how long does it take melanoma to develop?
weeks, months, or years
what is melanoma caused by?
intense sun exposure/blistering sun burns
who is at greater risk for melanoma?
people with fair skin, freckles, red/fair hair, light colored eyes/ people with lots of moles
Melanoma Diagnosis/ABCDE Guide
A- Asymmetry: 1/2 of skin lesion is unlike the other
B- Border: irregular outline
C- Color: mix of color -(black, brown, blue, red, and white)- or change in color
D- Diameter: larger than 6mm – try to catch before this large
E- Evolution: changes in pigmented spot – change in shape, color, and size
