What is a greenfield site?
A n area of countryside or open space that has not yet been built on (green belt).
What is a brownfield site?
An area of disused and derelict land in an urban area that is available for redevelopment.
How many jobs were lost between 1966 and 1976?
20%.
What caused the decline?
Containerisation.
What caused depopulation?
Suburbanisation, building of satellite towns and slum clearance.
What caused further decline?
De-centralisation as shops struggled to pay high price rents and moved to less central areas. New high-tech industries located in business parks as is cheaper and transport links.
What did e-commerce cause?
Put pressure on high street shops and some firms moved to distribution centres and cheaper rent.
How did financial and business services and TNC investment grow?
Law companies benefit from being close to ecahother, TNC’s in London.
Gentrification and studentification?
Wealthier people move into run down areas and regenerate by improving houses, businesses spring up to cater towards rich people. High student population led to thriving services and entertainment venues and new jobs and wealth.
Urban sprawl.
Large shopping areas like Bluewater have been built on the edge of the city where land is cheaper and there is less congestion and more parking space, Availability of jobs attracted many people to live there.
Leisure and culture.
London hosted Olympic games in 2012 with most important investment being in East End. Transport links and the athletes village has been developed into a modern housing estate . The sports stadiums are open for community use as well as world sporting events. New jobs created.
What is rebranding?
Improving a place’s image so that people will want to go there. It usually involved regeneration-making actual improvements and reputation.
Positive impacts.
Transport links were improved, docklands light railway built and also jubilee line, Thames barrier park, population increased so local shops thrived.
Negative impacts.
Many local people were forced out, 34% of local pop were unskilled workers and most lived in council housing so could not afford new houses and were not suited to new jobs.
